I began painting still life’s to focus on two basic painting issues. First, I wanted to explore the tension between three dimensional forms and the two dimensional painting surface; second, I felt I needed to reconcile color with a drawn structure. Up to this point I felt my drawings and paintings were not informing each other. I resolved to work on integrating my drawing and painting by simplifying the subject to a few objects in a shallow space with a limited color palette.
Each painting begins with a grid. Then I paint and draw the connections between the objects to develop the forms and spatial relationships. Sometimes there is a point at which the abstract color shapes and what they represent balance and vibrate back and forth. My next paintings are focusing specifically on this phenomenon.
